Official Installation & Inauguration of UCT’S 6th Chancellor, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe
Glamour and class were the order of the prestigious evening on Friday, 10 December 2021, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the official installation and inaugural address of the University of Cape Town’s sixth Chancellor, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe.
Moloi-Motsepe was announced as the new Chancellor in January 2020; taking over from Dr. Graca Machel who served the role for 20 years since 1999. Although she was officially announced in January 2020, her induction ceremony was delayed by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The procession on Friday evening commenced with Sibongile Mngoma performing ‘Please from Africa’ and the National Anthem for esteemed guests present, including the likes of UCT Chair of Council Ms. Babalwa Ngonyama, UCT Vice Chancellor Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng as Programme Director and UCT Registrar, Mr Roystron Pillay.
“It is truly an honor to stand before you as the 6th Chancellor of this glorious institution. It is especially important for me that I can to speak to you, and take up this position, on international Human Rights day, when we commemorate the United Nations adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at this symbolic Convocation. Although I have been chancellor for almost two years already, I gratefully receive this ceremonial title from the University of Cape Town as I take over from former Chancellor and former First Lady Dr. Graca Machel.” Dr. Moloi-Motsepe said as part of her speech.
