University of Venda's sixth Chancellor - Advocate Mojanku Gumbi
The University of Venda is a long-standing Member of PURCO SA, a purchasing consortium for Higher Education in Southern Africa. The CEO, Mr Selvan Govender, warmly welcomes and congratulates Advocate Mojanku Gumbi on her installation as Univen’s new Chancellor, and looks forward to her bringing fresh perspectives to Univen and to the Higher Education Sector as a whole.
Friday, 18 February 2022, marked a special day for the University of Venda as they installed their sixth Chancellor, who is also the first female Chancellor the institution has ever had, Advocate Mojanku Gumbi during a function at the university’s auditorium.
“We look forward to her leadership and guidance in the years to come. Her involvement with the university will certainly stand us in good stead,” said Univen’s vice-chancellor and principal, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, earlier this week. The incoming Chancellor, Gumbi holds Law degrees from the University of Limpopo and the University of the Witswatersrand, and a certificate in Trial Advocacy from the University of Texas in Austin. With over 30 years of experience in private practice, public policy development and African conflict resolution, she is a human rights lawyer, who has worked as an attorney and an advocate.
Gumbi has served on the boards of several companies, trusts and philanthropic foundations, including the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Open Society Foundation, the Southern African Political and Economic Trust, the Black Lawyers Association, and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation to name but a few. She also served as a council member of the former University of the North (now the University of Limpopo) and the former Technikon of the Witwatersrand (which merged with the former Rand Afrikaans University in 2005 to form the University of Johannesburg.
