The presentation: Using Behaviour Profiles to enhance your business relationships

The digital transformation journey has accelerated since the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic, forcing a virtual mode of delivery and remote working to become the new normal for many organizations across the globe. With this new normal comes sudden unanticipated major changes in the work environment, personal interactions and relationships.

On Wednesday 21 July 2021, PURCO SA hosted the fourth PURCO SA Ponder session with guest speaker Andries Keun, Managing Director at Thomas International in Africa. Andries delivered an engaging and very useful presentation and Q&A session about the topic ‘Understanding behaviour profiles to manage remotely’.

With a turnout of almost 200 attendees, Andries started by introducing the DISC behaviour-assessment model, which was originally developed by the famous American psychologist William Moulton Marston. (On a totally unrelated sidenote he also invented an early prototype of the lie detector, and was the comic book writer who created the character Wonder Woman.

The DiSC model provides a useful means to categorise people's behavior into four types (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness). The DiSC assessment tool is used by millions of people every year to help improve teamwork, communication, and productivity.

Andries explained the four different types of behaviour categories, their styles of communication, characteristics, working strengths, support factors, and addressed the challenges to overcome and how to support each profile when working remotely.

He explained that DiSC is an acronym that stands for the four main personality profiles described in the DiSC model: (D)ominance, (i)nfluence, (S)teadiness and (C)onscientiousness.

  • People with D personalities tend to be confident and place an emphasis on accomplishing bottom-line results.
  • People with i personalities tend to be more open and place an emphasis on relationships and influencing or persuading others.
  • People with S personalities tend to be dependable and place the emphasis on cooperation and sincerity.
  • People with C personalities tend to place the emphasis on quality, accuracy, expertise, and competency.

There was much to take away from the presentation and attendees found the model to be very relevant.

Thank you for this very informative session!
